So this is interesting... I did a comic for Friday, but apparently in my exhaustion and delirium, I TOTALLY forgot to upload it. As such, there is now a comic in place for Friday the 10th that was not there previously! It's like a whole other extra comic! Yes, that's how we'll choose to see this - and not at all as a complete and utter failure on my part to do the single most important part of my job - UPLOADING THE COMICS I MAKE.
Hi folks! I know the last comic is a few days ago, now, but the last few days have been maddeningly busy. And now that it's midnight, I'm just sitting here realizing I flat-out don't have it in me to complete the comic tonight. I think I'm near the end of the stuff that's been occupying all of my time, but one never knows. That said, I WILL get a comic out for Tuesday, and then I'm going to try like hell to make sure I get back on a reliable schedule. Today just wore me out beyond what I was...

That said, I WILL get a comic out for Tuesday, and then I'm going to try like hell to make sure I get back on a reliable schedule. Today just wore me out beyond what I was really prepared to handle. Just remember - I might have my moments where I'm not the most reliable, but I'm always gonna keep coming back. :) Take it easy, folks!

Man, oh man. Haven't had this happen to me in ages, but here I am, having worked on the comic for a good solid hour this evening, and my computer bluescreens out of nowhere, and I lose it all. All of it. (Yes, I know... proper savings habits blah blah blah...) As it's now 1 AM and I have to work in the morning (not to mention attend to a child with no concept of sleeping in) I'm going to have to call it a loss on this one.

Man, oh man. Haven't had this happen to me in ages, but here I am, having worked on the comic for a good solid hour this evening, and my computer bluescreens out of nowhere, and I lose it all. All of it. (Yes, I know... proper savings habits blah blah blah...)

As it's now 1 AM and I have to work in the morning (not to mention attend to a child with no concept of sleeping in) I'm going to have to call it a loss on this one. I know I don't usually post when I miss comics any more, but aside from the one I missed this week, I've been trying very hard to be on the ball lately, so this one just pissed me off, and I felt the need to vent before I just went to bed in frustration.

There. That's done. :) Love you guys! I'll get the strip out Monday instead, though. Stupid computer.

Howdy, folks! Today is a pretty big day here at the Dean household, because today is the day Liz is launching her online store, Seams Geeky! Those of you who follow the comic know that Liz sews her own cloth diapers. She was into the concept well before Harper was even a gleam in our eye... back in May 2010, she started looking into it.

She tried sewing a couple of patterns she found online and gave them to my sister, but none of them ever really seemed to fit right, or be easy to use.

After 2 1/2 years of drafting our own patterns, constantly tweaking them here and there, we've finally got a cloth diaper that we feel is one of the best available. It's trimmer than 90% of the other diapers you see on the market, it uses the most absorbent materials we could find, (we tested dozens of different soaker materials) and frankly, we're just damned proud of it.

Add to that the fact that we came into possession of an embroidery machine for Liz' birthday, and we put the two together to make geeky diapers for... well, parents like us. The fact is, people our age are having kids now. I see it on facebook all the time, and a lot of people these days are realizing how awesome cloth diapering is. We did our research, and the average kid goes through about 6000 diapers in their first two years of life. If you're paying for disposables, that's about $1,700. Meanwhile, a set of about 24 cloth diapers will last you until you child is potty trained, and only costs $600. And let me tell you, having used both over Harper's life, the cloth diapers are just as easy to use as the disposables - and smell a while helluva lot better. So we took Liz' diaper pattern (which we have dubbed "The Pocket Protector") and added a bunch of custom embroidery to make unique, fun diapers that work like a charm. (All the embroidery is designed by yours truly)

We've got a lot more planned for Seams Geeky, though - in addition to diapers, we'll be doing iron-on patches, pillowcases, throw pillows... all kinds of crazy cloth stuff. So be sure to head over to the Seams Geeky Etsy store, and while you're at it, check out the facebook page and give it a "like" to get updates when new products come in stock!

Crap... so I was apparently so addled from being sick that I completely forgot to post thursday's comic, which I even did on-time. So if you feel like an extra dose of RL today, go back to yesterday and enjoy. :)

Howdy, folks! I know I rarely come on and post on here these days, but I felt this was too cool to just relegate to a facebook post or some such. Those of you who follow along with the comic know that Liz got an embroidery/sewing machine for her birthday last year, and since then, I've kind of gotten the machine embroidery bug.
It's a lot of fun to add artwork to various items of clothing. (And yes, to Harper's Diapers) Then I went and did a comic featuring Steampunk Bacon Cat, a design Liz downloaded from Urban Threads.

That very night, I was contacted by the owner of the Urban Threads site, who saw the comic and thought it was cool - this is another of those mutual fandom kinds of things, as I'd become a big fan of the designs on their site, and REALLY impressed with the way they stitch up. These people know a thing or two about embroidery design, let me tell you. I've made a few fun embroidery designs recently, but then I see the stuff they do, and I'm just humbled.

And I was even MORE humbled when I was asked to participate in their "Featured Artist" program! Click on the image above (or this link here) to head over to my featured artist page, which just went live this morning. They have a pretty fun interview on there in addition to a digitized version of my "Nerd Rage" design for sale! It's available in three different sizes, so even schlubs like me with a pathetic 4"x4" hoop can stitch it up. And while you're there, browse through the different designs they have available - these guys are the utlimate geek source for machine/hand embroidery patterns.

I realize embroidery is an EXTREMELY niche thing, but crafty folks would do well to look into it. You can buy a Brother SE400 machine on Amazon for as little as $350 (Far less expensive than the average $1,500 machines you will see out there) and get into the hobby. Trust me... this stuff is addictive. Thanks again to everyone over at Urban Threads for letting me into the fold - you guys rock!
